Pup ‘n’ Taco Visitors Chime In…

My first exposure to tacos when I first moved to California as a kid was at Pup’n'Taco around 1969 in Arleta. Tacos were 19¢ each and my mom would give my brother and myself $1 each to go on our bikes to get tacos for dinner. Del Taco’s appear similar and always have flashbacks of PNT when I one.

Just today I was remembering back in the early eighties, late seventies, when my mom would take us to the Huntington Park Pup-n-Taco location…great times, except for one time when we were driving back home and my mom crashed her ’66 Mustang into some idiot who pulled out of some side street.
– Huntington Park, CA

One of the worst days of my youth was when they closed the Pup’n'Taco on the corner of Paramount Blvd and Stewart & Gray Rd in Downey, CA…Only to reopen it a month or so later as a Taco Bell. In fact, my sister once flirted with a server and her gave her his Pup’n'Taco hat!

I just found your goodbye Chris post. You summed it all up really well… Hugs from Berlin

Wow what High School memories going after school to Pup n Taco for some ketchup dogs fries and an RC Cola. Good memories!
– Montclair, CA

Great web site! Brings back memories as a kid I ate at Pup n Taco in San Bernardino, CA. I’ll be ordering a T-Shirt soon!
– Chattanooga, TN

Pup ‘n’ Taco, my friend jeff girlfriend’s father owned one in lawndale; we would hang out, eat there and laugh at the ‘uniform’ he’d wear while working; it wasn’t as dorky as McDs, but close. Did you read Radio Waves by Jim Ladd? Lots of KMET and radio history. Paraquat Kelly is now selling real estate.

The Kona Lanes t-shirts are great! Mahalo!
– Santa Rosa, CA

Great site! Can you adopt me?! I worked for Pup ‘n’ Taco for one year in the mid-eighties…
– Downey, CA

Regarding your Cavalcade of Insomnia musing, Peter Max ruled! I’m not sure he actually did that animated 7-Up spot, but he did some billboards for them. I actually sent in and got posters of them for my bedroom. The one I remember the most was the 7-Up bottle with the psychedelic butterfly wings.
– Modesto, CA

Wow what a trip. Basically lived in HB my whole life. Recently I was helping my mother clean out a closet and stumbled upon a coupon for Pup N Taco. Wow did that bring back memories of Greasy Orange Wrappers!!
– Huntington Beach, CA

I remember my dad taking me and my bro to the pup ‘n’ taco on Harbor and Wilson when we where kids, we had the burritos and slushies.. great memories..thanks for this great site.
– Costa Mesa, CA

I grew up in Costa Mesa (long live Kona Lanes!) and I’m surprised to see anyone even remembers Pup ‘n’ Taco. I’d always get my combo burrito double wrapped because the tortillas tended to break but, oh, did the taste beat the tar out of the Bell that bought it out. Harbor and Wilson, wasn’t it?
– Santa Rosa, CA

Great memories. I esp. remember the orange paper wrappers. I saw a Pup N Taco in the background while watching an old Charlie’s Angels once. Too cool!
– Mission Viejo, CA

It was a great place to eat when I was little and I can still taste those tacos as I write this. BTW, your site is fantastic!
Pacoima, CA

My parents are ALWAYS talking about hanging out at Pup N’ Taco when they were in high school, and when I saw that you have PNT shirts I thought it would be a great birthday gift for my Dad.
Corona, CA

love the pup n taco shirt – their slushes were a childhood favorite of mine – i would love to find an old sign from there.
Los Angeles, CA

I stumbled upon your site while a friend and I were reminiscing about the Pup n Taco near our house. Now we are both reading your site… He’s still back in the South Bay (Torrance area) and I am now living in Austin TX. But we both remember back to those great times. The times of Zody’s and Gemco. I even got your KHJ radio going. We are both in our late 30′s now, and remember that, KMET (a little bit of heaven…), Dr. Demento, KLOS stickers, etc. We had a Pop Shoppe nearby in Torrance. Miss those days, but happy to see that some of the old places still exist around SoCal. Anyways, just wanted to drop a line and say how much we like your website.
Austin, TX

Dave, hello… is there any Pup n Tacos still around??? I grew up on Pup n Taco. I’m craving a chili dog and taco right now! I just had a conversation with a friend about growing up in the Los Angeles area with Pup n Tacos all over the valley.
Colorado Springs, CO

I’m a kid from the ’70s. I was a die hard Pup ‘n’ Taco fan! I LOVE IT!!! A++ all the way around! Shipping was top-notch and super fast! Make more T-shirts!
Toluca Lake, CA

I grew up on a strict Chili Dog and Cherry Slush diet!
– Los Angeles, CA

I’m the guy who created the Mutant suit, the Transmutatron, and designed the Marvan spaceship for Larry Blamire’s “Lost Skeleton” movie which you said on your site is a favorite of yours & Katie. Very cool to hear! Also saw your mention of “Ray Harryhausen presents” and Screaming Forehead for which I had the pleasure of creating the opening animation sequence. Anyway, just thought I’d say howdy and thanks for the mention!… just wanted to say hey…and that I love your artwork and all stuff you have on your site….a pleasure to run across it just by accident…interesting juxtaposition…Kolchak and Lost Skeleton on one web page!….and that book, “Cartoon Modern” by Amid Amidi looks great!
– Waynesboro, VA

These shirts are a blast from the past. Highly recommended!
– Encinitas, CA

Today like never before, I am craving Pup-n-Taco. I had a softball game earlier today and remembered when I played little league every Saturday as a kid I would get the usual, a chili cheeseburger (packed in the white cardboard holder) fries, neatly bagged and a large RC….
– Laguna Hills, CA

I think what you did with Pup ‘n’ Taco is awesome. I showed people here at work and they were blown away. Thanks for bringing back great memories!
– Lakewood, CA

“Lackamaroo!”
– Chicago, IL

I googled for “Pup n Taco” images, to try to find an image to post on a message board — a thread about nostalgia for old restaurants. I found your site. Your art and photos are fabulous. I especially like the Joshua Tree photos (or are those paintings? wonderful. brought back sweet memories, great park) and the radio station logo recreations. The “Fountain Valley Drive-In” t-shirt — wow. Thanks for posting a great site.
– Chicago, IL

Nice site, by the way. Just came across it tonight. You’ve already got me scouring in the internet for “Cocktail: The Drinks Bible for the 21st Century.”
– Wichita, KS

Think of finding a old Pup n Taco menu to slap on your site…For the 20th anniv. of the demise of the pup n taco chain (thanks pepsico-which owned taco bell in 1985).
p.s. – Neil young’s prairie wind is ‘album of the year’!
– Fontana, CA

I am a former California native (LA and LB) living in Atlanta now. I remember Pup ‘N Taco well. I really dig the site. Question: how’s the Jag running? Enjoyed the musing on your trip to Kentucky.
– Atlanta, GA

My mother in law is always raving about the Pup n Taco hot sauce she’d eat with her burritos when she was pregnant with my wife. Now my wife is pregnant and she graves the same thing. She remembers it from when she was a little girl. I was curious if there’s anyway to get some of that same hot sauce sent to me? I have no problem paying for it. I have never been to a Pup n Taco so I have no idea what this wonderful hot sauce they so madly talk about tastes like.
